I thought I would share my Dads expert opinion on the current car market. In no particular order. I do not agree with any of these or the picture by the way
1. GM (Government Motors)
2. Chrysler (bailed out, look dated, and are unreliable)
3. Mazda (unreliable cars during the ford era even though they were basically Fords)
4. VW- because he had a problem with his Rabbit 30 years ago
5. Subaru- Piloted by lesbians and they're ugly
6. Nissan- ?
7. Volvo- "come out of the factory with an Obama bumper sticker"
8. Prius- see Volvo
9. Kia/Hyundai- ?
10. The Germans, unreliable
11. Smart cars- should get better fuel economy, and have a stupid design
12. MINI- consumer reports said so
13. Toyota- ?
14. Acura- dat beak
15. Maybe Tesla- because of the stimulus money (that they didn't even apply for nor recieve)
For those of you playing at home that leaves 2 mainstream manufacturers : Honda and Fjord. I pointer out how stupid his hatred of Mazda is when he complained about how the dual cats have a resent to grenade in Mazda 6s when I said that his beloved Ford designed that. I should note: OUR 6 NEVER HAD THAT PROBLEM, and it was extremely reliable it's entire life. So in case if you're wondering why I don't like Ford that much, he's why.

If it makes you feel any better, my dad will find something to hate about any car. We have 7 cars at my house, and he will find something to hate about every single one. Even his old muscle cars, he half praises them, and half hates them.
427 Fairlane Cobra Jet? Hated changing the spark plugs on it every week, and hated the gas mileage. Cops would hear him start the thing two blocks away, it would do 60 in first and 90 in second. Fastest he ever admits to taking it was 127MPH on a closed airport runway when he used to date a stewardess.
289 and 427 Cobras? Fast little cars, but not practical.
GT350 Fastback? Sold it after a year because he didn't want it anymore.
The list goes on. In fact, he only bought the Fairlane "to see what all the fuss was about" regarding the muscle cars of the time.
Whatever. I have a car, I don't really care who makes it, as long as I can work on it, and it's not all that complicated or stupid expensive.

Here's a list of the brands my dad hates:
1. Ford
2. Saab
3. Anything British
4. Anything Italian (including brand new Fiat's, Maserati's, Ferrari's, etc.)
4. Ford
He was raised in a Chevy/Chrysler family. (We still have the '64 Impala and '72 Cadillac that they drove) For whatever reason, he absolutely hates Ford so much that he won't even allow me to buy one and park it in our driveway. I think he hates Saab's because one of his friends was killed doing about 90 MPH in an old Saab 9000. I tell him that it wasn't the car manufacturers' fault, but that doesn't help. His Italian hates is because he seems to think that the same manufacturing processes are being used to build them, that they used 60 years ago.

I'm sure that problem on his Rabbit were miniscule, compared to a Mk. IV Golf.

My counter argument to GM haters.
This strategy also works for most manufacturers. Substitute Corvette for car of choice.

Oh yeah. Wouldn't surprise me if he didn't even have any reliability concerns with it.

THAT WAS MADE BY THE GUBMENT! (Ignoring the fact that GM shares were sold by the US over a year ago.)

Yes! And I'd much rather have a Cadillac compared to an MKwhatever. And SBC>>>>>>ecoboost

As of late, Ford has been making really good cars. In the 90's, early 00's I would have never considered a Ford (except a FoxStang) due to real or imagined shortcomings. I now drive a 2014 Escape titanium and love it. Also your dad is right on about the Smart Car.

If Corvettes are the byproduct of a "pinko commie fascist regime led by a dictator" then I'm as communist as they come!

I just don't like how complicated things on Fords are becoming. I think the EcoBoost 3.5L on the F150 is a bad idea. I mean, it's powerful, but the durability of that engine is going to be atrocious when the trucks get on their 2nd and 3rd owners. I much prefer the simplicity of the OHV N/A Chevy small block. It's going to last much longer than the EcoBoost. And I'm glad you like your Ford, but after my dad talking nonstop about how amazing his new Edge is, ruined Ford for me. But with that being said, I'm so happy that the entirety of the big 3 is producing cars that rival the entire world. But my preference lies with GM.

Yeah I can't really think of any car company where I hate their entire lineup. Even Mitsubishi!

Yeah same. Except maybe some of the sketchier chinese brands or something. All of the main brands at least get one of their cars right.

I have no problem at all with GM they are making some really good cars these days also. When I think about it I wouldn't have bought anything but a Toyota or a Honda in the 90's for my basic transport. I can see where "Ford is awesome son, everything else sucks" would get old in quite a hurry. I'm cautiously optimistic for the new ecoboost F150's but nothing beats an old F100 with a straight six and three on the tree for reliability and simplicity.

I was thinking about USDM manufacturers, but a slow, sketchy, and cheap Chinese car sounds like so much fun to hoon/inevitably destroy

Yeah certainly! I would much rather have a Ford FWD passenger car than GM though, excluding the impala. And I hold out hope for the Ecoboost, but I think a high strung (for a truck engine) vs a diesel was a terrible decision, but then again, this is Jalopnik.
